#7 | Elections, Raids, and Repression

Central America is living through a tense and defining moment. In Nicaragua, the Ortega-Murillo regime deepens its authoritarian grip: crushing historic centers of resistance, elevating enforcers of political repression, and even returning the bodies of prisoners who died under suspicious circumstances. Across the border in Honduras, citizens are demanding an end to the prolonged state of emergency that threatens democratic guarantees ahead of elections.

Meanwhile in Guatemala, U.S.- and EU-sanctioned prosecutor Consuelo Porras continues to weaponize the justice system against opponents. Against this backdrop of repression and resistance, the region also bids farewell to José María Tojeira, the Jesuit priest remembered as a tireless advocate for truth and human rights in Central America.
