On April 13, the National Network of Women Human Rights Defenders in Honduras presented its report «Walking Our Justice,» presenting an analysis of the violence against women human rights defenders, their organizations, and communities during the year 2025.
The Network recorded a total of 2,484 attacks against human rights defenders. Of these, 348 were attacks against individuals; 1,906 were collective attacks, and 230 were attacks against organizations.
According to the report, the Honduran state is most frequently cited as responsible for the attacks. Documented testimonies indicate that 45% of the incidents were perpetrated by police and members of the armed forces.
According to the document, 45% of the attacks occurred in the department of Colón, which has records of armed attacks against peasant cooperatives, Garifuna communities, as well as evictions and attempted evictions.
The Network also recorded 325 attacks in the department of Atlántida. According to their data, this demonstrates the recurrence of attacks against women human rights defenders in the Aguán region, an important hydrographic zone for the country and Garifuna territory.
68% of the attacks occurred while defenders were protecting their territory and common goods, and another 13% when they carried out work in defense of truth, justice, and reparation. The attacks are similar to those suffered by Berta Cáceres, who was murdered for her activism.
The report also points to a growing pattern of attacks against people close to women human rights defenders: their families, communities, and support networks have become targets. Violence is not isolated but is spreading to weaken the environments of those who defend human rights.
This violence occurs within a context of structural crisis in Honduras, marked by social conflict, territorial disputes, and political tensions. It is a context where defending human rights is becoming increasingly risky.
The report demonstrates that these are not isolated incidents but a pattern sustained over time, where each year these figures not only repeat themselves but also worsen.
